RESUMO

Shoulder pain is a common musculoskeletal pain in the general population and results in significant disability, quality of life impairment and financial burden to the health care system. This cross-sectional study was carried out among purposively selected 61 adult patients with shoulder pain and or limited range of motion in the Department of Radiology and Imaging, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from September 2018 to August 2020 to determine the usefulness of USG in detection of common shoulder abnormalities, as an initial imaging modality using MRI as reference standard. The majority of the patients 25(40.98%) were in age group of 51-60 years with mean age of 52.98±10.85 years. In the dectection of rotator cuff pathology, the overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of USG for any complete tear were 100.0% each, for any partial tear were 79.71%, 96.57% and 91.80%, for any rotator cuff tear were 83.33%, 96.25% and 91.80%, and for any tendinosis were 90.48%, 99.37% and 96.31% respectively. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of USG were 88.23%, 92.59% & 90.16% for long head of biceps tendon sheath effusion, 100.0% each for long head of biceps tendon dislocation, 71.11%, 87.50% and 75.41% for glenohumeral joint effusion, and 58.06%, 96.67% and 77.05% for bursal effusion respectively. From this study, it is concluded that high resolution USG showed high sensitivity, specificity and accuracy compared to MRI in detecting common shoulder abnormalities, and could be considered as the first line imaging modality in the evaluation of shoulder pain.

RESUMO

We evaluated the effects of supplementing bacterial direct-fed microbial (DFM) on performance, apparent total-tract digestibility, rumen fermentation, and immune parameters of lactating dairy cows. One hundred fourteen multiparous Holstein cows (41 ± 7 DIM) were used in a randomized complete block design with an experiment comprising 14 d of a covariate (pre-experimental sample and data collection) and 91 d of an experimental period. Cows were blocked based on energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield during the covariate period and the following treatments were randomly assigned within each block: (1) control (CON), corn silage-based total mixed ration without DFM; (2) PRO-A, basal diet top-dressed with a mixture of Lactobacillus animalis and Propionibacterium freudenreichii at 3 × 109 cfu/d; and 3) PRO-B, basal diet top-dressed with a mixture of L. animalis, P. freudenreichii, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus licheniformis at 11.8 × 109 cfu/d. Milk yield, dry matter intake (DMI), and body weight were measured daily, while milk samples for component analysis were taken on 2 consecutive days of each week of data collection. Feces, urine, rumen, and blood samples were taken during the covariate period, wk 4, 7, 10, and 13 for estimation of digestibility, N-partitioning, rumen fermentation, plasma nutrient status and immune parameters. Treatments had no effect on DMI and milk yield. Fat-corrected milk (3.5% FCM) and milk fat yield were improved with PRO-B, while milk fat percent and feed efficiency (ECM/DMI) tended to increase with PRO-B compared with PRO-A and CON. Crude fat digestibility was greater with PRO-B compared with CON. Feeding CON and PRO-A resulted in higher total volatile fatty acid concentration relative to PRO-B. Percentage of neutrophils tended to be reduced with PRO-A compared with CON and PRO-B. The mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of anti-CD44 antibody on granulocytes tended to be higher in PRO-B compared with CON. The MFI of anti-CD62L antibody on CD8+ T cells was lower in PRO-A than PRO-B, with PRO-A also showing a tendency to be lower than CON. This study indicates the potential of DFM to improve fat digestibility with consequential improvement in fat corrected milk yield, feed efficiency and milk fat yield by lactating dairy cows. The study findings also indicate that dietary supplementation with DFM may augment immune parameters or activation of immune cells, including granulocytes and T cells; however, the overall effects on immune parameters are inconclusive.

RESUMO

Introduction Psychological disorders are one of the leading causes of disability globally. Evidence suggests the positive role of physical activity on physical and mental health in various countries. However, a limited number of studies have been done in Saudi Arabia to investigate the association between physical activity and psychological health, especially among women. Objectives The objective of the study was to identify the prevalence of depression, stress, anxiety, and physical activity as well as examine the association between depression, anxiety, stress, and social support in relation to physical activity among Saudi women at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University (PNU). Methods A total of 712 Saudi students and staff from PNU, with a mean (SD) age of 20.59(5.30), voluntarily completed an electronic-based questionnaire, which included three validated scales in the Arabic language: The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 Items (DASS-21), Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), and Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) social support. Results The results of this cross-sectional study showed that the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress were 24%, 31%, and 22.1%, respectively. Levels of physical activity were not associated with psychological disorders while sedentary time was strongly correlated with depression, anxiety, and stress (p<0.001). Emotional support, affectionate support, and positive social interaction were negatively correlated with depression (p<0.05). Conclusion The findings indicate that stress, depression, and anxiety were relatively common among Saudi females, especially among young ages, and that social support was a significant protective factor of depression. Community-based psychological health prevention programs and social support groups are needed to address these issues. The second major finding was that 51% of the participants were insufficiently active and 61% were having a sedentary lifestyle. Depression, anxiety, and stress scores are strongly correlated with sedentary time, which highlights the need for establishing a national policy that encourages active living and discourages sedentary behavior.

RESUMO

This study is aimed to find out various clinical, radio-graphical and echocardiographic variables to predict mitral valvular disease and their correlation with Echocardiography. This cross-sectional observational study was conducted in the Department of Radiology and Imaging, in collaboration with Department of Cardiology, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Mymensingh, Bangladesh from January 2017 to December 2018. Total 50 consecutive cases enrolled in this study who was the patients of mitral valvular disease. Both chest radiograph and echocardiograph were done for each patient. There were 76% female and 26% male with a female-male ratio 3.16:1 with mean±SD (41.54±12.44). About 42% patients had previous history of rheumatic fever. The most common x-ray findings of heart were increased central density (90%) followed by enlargement in transverse diameter (88%), straightening of the left border (88%), widening of the carina (86%), full pulmonary conus (84%) and double contour of right border (76%). About 47(94%) patients confirmed mitral valvular heart disease on echocardiography. The prominent findings included left atrium was predominantly severely dilated (50%), severely reduced mitral valve orifice area (68%), mild mitral regurgitation (46%) and mild pulmonary hypertension (38%). And overall sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of chest radiograph in the detection of mitral valvular heart disease were 85.11%, 66.67%, 97.56%, 14.89% and 84%, respectively. These findings suggest that chest radiograph could be used as an adjunct tool with echocardiography.

RESUMO

Dairy farmers are often challenged with the need to feed high-moisture corn (HMC) after less than 30 d of fermentation. The objective this study was to assess the effects of microbial inoculation and particle size on fermentation profile, aerobic stability, and ruminal in situ starch degradation of HMC ensiled for a short period. High-moisture corn was harvested, coarsely ground (3,798 ± 40 µm, on average) or finely ground (984 ± 42 µm, on average), then ensiled in quadruplicate vacuum pouches untreated (CON) or with the following treatments: Lactobacillus plantarum CH6072 at 5 × 104 cfu/g and Enterococcus faecium CH212 at 5 × 104 cfu/g of fresh forage (LPEF); or Lactobacillus buchneri LB1819 at 7.5 × 104 cfu/g and Lactococcus lactis O224 at 7.5 × 104 cfu/g (LBLL). Silos were allowed to ferment for 14 or 28 d. Ruminal in situ starch degradation increased when HMC was finely ground. In addition, in situ starch degradation was greater and aerobic stability increased approximately 5-fold with LBLL compared with CON and LPEF. An interaction between microbial inoculation and storage length occurred for lactic acid. At 14 d, concentrations of lactic acid were greatest in LPEF and lowest in LBLL. Lactic acid concentrations increased from 14 to 28 d with CON and LPEF, but decreased with LBLL. At 28 d, concentrations of lactic acid were lower in LBLL compared with CON and LPEF. An interaction between particle size, microbial inoculation, and storage length occurred for acetic acid and ammonia-N. At 14 and 28 d, acetic acid concentrations were greatest in finely ground LBLL followed by coarsely ground LBLL. Ammonia-N concentrations increased across all treatments from 0 to 28 d. At 14 and 28 d, concentrations of ammonia-N were greatest in finely ground LBLL and lowest in coarsely ground CON and coarsely ground LPEF. Results from this study suggest that L. buchneri LB1819 can produce acetic acid in as little as 14 d, and that by 28 d, it has the potential to improve the aerobic stability of HMC. Additionally, results indicate that L. buchneri LB1819 has the potential to improve ruminal degradation of starch by 28 d of storage. Finally, results confirm enhanced fermentation and improved ruminal starch degradation with finely ground HMC by 28 d of storage.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of rehydrating and ensiling dry ground corn (DGC) with varying concentrations of wet brewers grain (WBG) on fermentation profile and ruminal in vitro starch digestibility (ivSD; 7-h incubations on dried and 4-mm ground samples). Samples of DGC and WBG were weighed separately and mixed into 100% WBG (WBG); mixture of DGC and WBG targeting 60 (RC60), 65 (RC65), or 70% (RC70) of dry matter (DM); and DGC rehydrated with distilled water targeting for 70% of DM (REH). Samples were ensiled in vacuum-sealed bags and allowed to ferment for 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 d. The experiment consisted of 30 treatments (5 mixtures of DGC and WGB × 6 ensiling time points) and 120 mini-silos (4 silos per treatment). All samples were analyzed for fermentation profile and water-soluble carbohydrates. Except for WBG, samples from 0 and 28 d were analyzed for ivSD. Content of DM was greater for REH (70.0%), followed by RC70 (69.2%), RC65 (63.9%), RC60 (58.4%), and WBG (17.5%) on d 0, with a slight decrease (1 to 2 percentage units) observed for all treatments until 28 d. Measurements of pH were highest for REH (6.19) and lowest for WBG (4.68) on 0 d, but all other treatments were lower than WBG on 14 and 28 d (3.83 vs. 4.14, on average). Except for WBG, all treatments had a gradual increase in lactic acid concentration from 0 to 28 d. In contrast, butyric acid gradually increased from 0 (0.25%) to 28 d (2.16% of DM) in WBG but not the other treatments. Fermentation patterns were related to water-soluble carbohydrates concentration, which was greater for all treatments except WBG from 0 (1.41% on average vs. 0.38% of DM, respectively) to 28 d (0.37% on average vs. 0.19% of DM, respectively). Except for RC60, greater ivSD was observed for all treatments on 28 than 0 d, but magnitude of the difference was greater for REH and RC70 (14.5 percentage units on average). Rehydration and ensiling of DGC with WBG resulted in adequate fermentation and enhanced starch digestibility.

RESUMO

Lipocalins are low molecular weight membrane transporters that are abundantly expressed in the salivary glands and other tissues of ticks. In this study, we identified a lipocalin-like molecule, designated as otlip, from the soft ticks Ornithodoros turicata, the vector for the relapsing fever causing spirochete Borrelia turicatae. We noted that the expression of otlip was developmentally regulated, with adult ticks expressing significantly higher levels in comparison to the larvae or nymphal ticks. Expression of otlip was evident in both fed and unfed O. turicata ticks, with significantly increased expression in the salivary glands in comparison to the midgut or ovary tissues. High conservation of the biogenic amine-binding motif was evident in the deduced primary amino acid sequence of Otlip. Protein modelling of Otlip revealed conservation of most of the residues involved in binding histamine or serotonin ligand. In vitro assays demonstrated binding of recombinant Otlip with histamine. Furthermore, prediction of post-translational modifications revealed that Otlip contained phosphorylation and myristoylation sites. Taken together, our study not only provides evidence for the presence of a lipocalin-like molecule in O. turicata ticks but also suggests a role for this molecule in the salivary glands of this medically important vector.

RESUMO

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is endemic in Pakistan. Although otherwise asymptomatic, HEV infection becomes fatal in pregnancy, with considerable maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. We conducted a descriptive study from April to October 2015 in 10 tertiary care hospitals throughout Pakistan to determine maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality in HEV-positive pregnant women with acute jaundice or raised liver function tests. Twenty-one of 135 women were HEV positive and in 3rd trimester except for 1 in 1st trimester. Overall prevalence of HEV in pregnancy was 0.19%. Ten women were artificially induced, 3 had premature labour, 4 delivered spontaneously (full term), 3 died and there was 1 intrauterine death. One woman had a home abortion before coming to hospital. There were 7 perinatal infant deaths: 4 intrauterine, 3 stillbirths and 1 abortion. Maternal mortality was significantly associated with delivery, as 17 mothers who lived went into labour spontaneously or were artificially induced, whereas 3 women who continued their pregnancy and did not deliver, died. Case fatality rate of HEV infection in pregnancy was 14.2%.

RESUMO

The maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop region is widely used for exploring genetic relationships and for investigating the origin of various animal species. Currently, domestic ducks play an important role in animal protein supply. In this study, partial mtDNA D-loop sequences were obtained from 145 samples belonging to six South-East Asian duck populations and commercial duck population. All these populations were closely related to the mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos), as indicated by their mean overall genetic distance. Sixteen nucleotide substitutions were identified in sequence analyses allowing the distinction of 28 haplotypes. Around 42.76% of the duck sequences were classified as Hap_02, which completely matched with Anas platyrhynchos duck species. The neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree also revealed that South-East Asian duck populations were closely related to Anas platyrhynchos. Network profiles were also traced using the 28 haplotypes. Overall, results showed that those duck populations D-loop haplotypes were shared between several duck breeds from Korea and Bangladesh sub continental regions. Therefore, these results confirmed that South-East Asian domestic duck populations have been domesticated from Anas platyrhynchos duck as the maternal origins.

RESUMO

The use of Korean native chicken is increasing, and the discovery of new genetic resources is very important from both economic and genetic conservation points of view. In this study, mtDNA D-loop sequences from 272 privately-owned Korean native chickens from a Hyunin farm were investigated. Seventeen nucleotide substitutions were identified from the sequence analysis and they were classified as 6 haplotypes. Previously investigated haplotypes in five Korean native chicken populations have been compared with the Hyunin chicken population. The results indicated that two haplotypes, H10 and H15, in the Hyunin chicken population were not previously identified in other Korean native chicken populations, representing 33.09% (90/272) and 1.1% (3/272) of the Hyunin population, respectively. On the other hand, four other haplotypes were identical to those of a previous study of Korean native chicken populations. This result is indicative of conservation strategies of Hyunin chicken populations for expanding the genetic diversity in the Korean native chicken population.

RESUMO

In order to evaluate the genetic diversity and discrimination among five Korean native chicken lines, a total of 86 individuals were genotyped using 150 microsatellite (MS) markers, and 15 highly polymorphic MS markers were selected. Based on the highest value of the number of alleles, the expected heterozygosity (He) and polymorphic information content (PIC) for the selected markers ranged from 6 to 12, 0.466 to 0.852, 0.709 to 0.882 and 0.648 to 0.865, respectively. Using these markers, the calculated genetic distance (Fst), the heterozygote deficit among chicken lines (Fit) and the heterozygote deficit within chicken line (Fis) values ranged from 0.0309 to 0.2473, 0.0013 to 0.4513 and -0.1002 to 0.271, respectively. The expected probability of identity values in random individuals (PI), random half-sib (PI half-sibs ) and random sibs (PI sibs ) were estimated at 7.98×10(-29), 2.88×10(-20) and 1.25×10(-08), respectively, indicating that these markers can be used for traceability systems in Korean native chickens. The unrooted phylogenetic neighbor-joining (NJ) tree was constructed using 15 MS markers that clearly differentiated among the five native chicken lines. Also, the structure was estimated by the individual clustering with the K value of 5. The selected 15 MS markers were found to be useful for the conservation, breeding plan, and traceability system in Korean native chickens.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effect of triticale dried distillers' grain with solubles (DDGS), flax (FS) and sunflower (SS) seed on growth and the fatty acid profile of subcutaneous (SQ) fat in individually housed steers (n = 15 per diet) fed ad libitum (DM basis); (1) control (CON) 90% barley grain + 10% barley silage; or substitution of barley grain for: (2) 30% DDGS; (3) 10% FS; (4) 30% DDGS + 8.5% FS; (5) 10% SS and (6) 30% DDGS + 8.5% SS. Oilseeds in the combination diets were reduced to maintain diet lipid levels below 9% DM and to determine if favorable changes in the fatty acid profile could be maintained or enhanced at reduced levels of oilseed. Plasma and SQ fat biopsies were collected at 0, 6, and 12 weeks. Inclusion of DDGS decreased (P < 0.05) average daily gain, feed conversion and backfat thickness. Feeding FS increased (P < 0.05) plasma ALA compared to CON and SS and consistently increased (P < 0.01) ALA and non-conjugated and non-methylene interrupted dienes (NCD), whereas SS tended to decrease ALA in fat. Inclusion of DDGS with FS further increased (P < 0.02) ALA and decreased (P < 0.05) NCD and 18:1-t10 in fat. The fact that the levels of n-3 fatty acids in SQ fat from steers fed DDGS + FS were higher than those obtained with FS alone, has obvious benefits to the practical cost of favorably manipulating fatty acid profiles in beef.

RESUMO

An alkaline thermotolerant lipase of Bacillus coagulans BTS1 was successively purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and DEAE anion exchange chromatography. The purified lipase immobilized in alginate beads showed an optimal activity at pH 7.5 and 55 degrees C. A pH of 5.0 or 10.0 completely quenched the activity of immobilized lipase. The alginate-bound lipase retained its activity following exposure to most of the organic solvents including amines, alkanes and alcohols. Chloride salt of Al3+, Co2+, Mg2+ and NH4+ modulated the lipase activity of alginate-immobilized enzyme. The alginate entrapped lipase showed a preferentially high activity towards p-nitrophenyl palmitate (C: 16) and activity of matrix increased following exposure to SDS. Moreover, the immobilized lipase retained more than 50% of its activity after 3rd cycle of reuse.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To define the risk factors (RF) profile and prevalence rates of high risk factors in an urban Pakistani community and compare it to the RF profile and prevalence rates of Pakistan National Health Survey. METHODS: The present study included RF relevant data of 400 house hold children selected by open invitation as a part of Metroville Health Study (MHS), a risk factor modification study which was a cooperation between National Heart Lung Blood institute (NHLBI) USA and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Pakistan. The base line data of 389 girls and 417 boys age 5-17 was included. PMRC data of 5067 and NHANES III survey data of 10,252 US children was used for comparison with MHS. RF analyzed were height weight, SBP, DBP, BMI and serum cholesterol. Comparisons between MHS and PMRC and US were made by using two tailed student t test and of high RF were defined as those exceeding US standards and expressed as percentages. RESULTS: The RF factor profile of urban Metroville children was worse than the national average of PMRC children. Except for diastolic blood pressure in both boys and girls and SBP in PMRC boys, all other RF were less than US children. Prevalence rates were higher in urban Metroville community, i.e., MHS compared to the PMRC which represents national average data. CONCLUSION: RF profile of Pakistani children has been presented and effect of urbanization demonstrated by comparing the PMRC and MHS RF profile. Hypertension in Pakistani children has emerged as a single most important RF requiring urgent prevention.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the blood pressure profile of children in Metroville, a lower middle class urban community of Karachi, Pakistan, and compare it to Pakistan National Health Survey of children. DESIGN: A research survey. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted by National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi from 1996 2002. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The blood pressure data was generated at the base line examination of MHS and was used to define the BP profile of urban Metroville children, age 2-17 years. Similar data of Pakistan National Health Survey (PNHS) undertaken by Pakistan Medical Research Council (PMRC), was used for comparison. RESULTS: A comparison of the blood pressure profile of the MHS with that of the PMRC showed that blood pressure was lower in the MHS. Additionally, comparison of the PMRC profile with USA data showed higher diastolic pressure in the PMRC. Comparison of Pakistani profiles with European data also showed higher blood pressure in Pakistani children. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the MHS represents the BP profile of children in newly emerging lower middle class urban communities in Pakistan. PMRC data represents national average and can be used to define the blood pressure characteristics of urban communities similar to Metroville. The comparison with affluent countries highlighted the urgent need for community based preventive programs to combat hypertensive diseases in Pakistan.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether and how apoptosis through the p53-Bax pathway affects sensitivity to chemotherapy in cervical cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma, who had human papilloma virus (HPV) and underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, were entered in the present study. Tumor specimens were obtained before and after chemotherapy. HPV was detected by polymerase chain reaction. The expression of Ki-67, p53, Bax and Bcl-2 proteins was determined by immunohistochemical staining. Apoptotic cells were identified by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate biotin nick-end labeling method. RESULTS: Of 30 patients, 18 responded to chemotherapy and 12 did not. The apoptotic index in tumors of responders was significantly higher than in non-responders after chemotherapy. The Ki-67 labeling index (LI) in responders was significantly higher than in non-responders before chemotherapy. Patients with tumors >33% of the LI, which was determined by a receiver operating characteristic curve, had a better survival rate. The incidence of p53 protein expression did not differ between responders and non-responders. After chemotherapy, the expression of Bax protein in responders was more frequent and Bcl-2 protein expression was less frequent than in non-responders. CONCLUSIONS: Chemosensitivity in cervical cancer may be associated with apoptosis via the p53-Bax pathway.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To reduce the incidence of nephrectomy or hydronephrosis in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From September 1998 to October 2000, we treated 58 patients with hydronephrosis; their ages ranged from 35 days to 11 years (mean age 4 years 7 months). All patients were subjected to a DTPA renogram with split function. In 12 patients (study group), kidney function was less than 10 % (range 0 - 10 %). Initially, nephrostomy was carried out in all 12 patients followed by Anderson-Hyne's pyeloplasty after 4 - 6 weeks. Postoperatively renal USG, urine r/m/e & c/s (routine and microscopic examination and culture and sensitivity test), blood urea, serum creatinine were assessed and DMSA scan and DTPA renogram with split functions were carried out in all patients. RESULTS: In the study group, all 12 patients showed improvement of renal function (more than 10 %) after nephrostomy and in all of them pyeloplasty was subsequently carried out within 4 - 6 weeks. There were no significant pre-, peri- or postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to common practice we do not recommend nephrectomy for hydronephrotic kidneys which show < 10 % of renal function on renogram. The renal functional status improves significantly after a preliminary nephrostomy, thus avoiding the need for a straightforward nephrectomy in children along with all the possible long-term effects of a single kidney.

RESUMO

In order to clarify arginine (Arg) metabolism by rumen microorganisms and by the tissues of ruminant animals, a convenient method for the simultaneous determination of Arg, citrulline (Cit), ornithine (Orn), proline (Pro) and 5-aminovaleric acid (5AV), and 4-aminobutyric acid (4AB) and lysine (Lys), incidentally, in goat rumen fluid was established by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The separation was carried out by stepwise isocratic elution with two mobile phases (solvent A and solvent B) on a LiChrospher 100 RP-18 column (150x4.6 mm I.D., 5 microm particle size) equipped with a guard column (4.0x4 mm, 5 microm particle size). Solvent A is composed of acetonitrile-sodium citrate buffer (pH 7.2) (15:85, v/v) containing tetrahydrofuran (5 ml/100 ml), with solvent B comprising acetonitrile-sodium citrate buffer (pH 5.4) (40:60, v/v). Five compounds (Cit, Arg, Pro, 4AB and 5AV) were separated within 33 min in solvent A and the other two (Orn and Lys) in solvent B. Solvent A was automatically switched to solvent B with the help of a valve controller. Complete separation needs 62 min after sample injection in a single chromatogram. Samples were derivatized with 9-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl chloride (FMOC-Cl) and detected on a fluorescence detector at excitation and emission wavelengths of 263 and 611 nm, respectively. The minimum detectable concentrations (microM) (signal-to-noise ratio, S/N 3:1) of these compounds were: 0.65 for Cit, 0.65 for Arg, 1.9 for Pro, 1.3 for 4AB, 1.9 for 5AV, 0.12 for Orn and 0.48 for Lys. When applied to rumen fluid from goats, recoveries of all compounds added to the rumen fluid were 96.6-100.6% for an intra-day study and 93.9-99.4% for inter-day (5 days) studies. The average contents of Orn, 5AV and Lys in the rumen fluid of three goats before morning feeding were 7.3, 13.5 and 3.6 microM, but Cit, Arg, Pro, and 4AB were not found, although all these four compounds were detected 1 h after feeding. Pro (390 microM) and 5AV (497.6 microM) were highest 1 h after feeding and then decreased. Orn levels before morning feeding were most similar to those after feeding.
